Update your profile from a CV
Upload a PDF or DOCX and FirstResume fills your profile from it in about a minute. What to feed it, and what to check when it finishes.
Upload the CV you already have and FirstResume reads it into your profile: basic information, summary, experience, education, projects, certifications, skills and languages. It works for about a minute and saves you typing all of that by hand.
Before you start
- The file has to be a PDF or DOCX. Anything else stops at a plain browser alert, "Only PDF and DOCX files are accepted.", and nothing uploads.
- Use your longest CV rather than your neatest. The profile is meant to hold more than any single document, so the more the file carries, the less you fill in afterwards.
- New accounts are offered this during onboarding, under "Yes, I do (Upload resume)". This guide is for doing it later.
Upload it
- Open Profile in the sidebar and press Edit at the bottom right.
- Press Update from CV at the bottom left.
- Drag the file onto "Drop your Resume here", or press Upload from computer and pick it.
- Press Update Profile. The button reads "Updating profile…" while FirstResume works through the document. Cancel closes the dialog and changes nothing.
- Wait for "Profile updated from CV successfully".
Read the result before you leave
Your profile now reflects the document, card by card. Detail you typed by hand and left out of the CV, a skill you added, a note on a side project, may need re-entering, so go through the page rather than trusting it.
- Check dates, job titles and company names against the CV itself. Reading a document is the part AI gets wrong.
- Put back anything missing, and add what the CV never mentioned in the first place.
- Press Save Changes if you have edited anything.
Job preferences sit on their own tab and no CV touches them: Set your job preferences.
Tips
- To turn the same file into an editable resume instead, use Build Resume: Build a resume.
- Run this again whenever your CV gets ahead of your profile, then tidy the result.
