Build a resume

Start a resume in Resume Builder from a PDF or DOCX you already have, or from a blank one, and land in the editor ready to work on it.

  • Before you start
  • Start it
  • What the editor does

You finish with a resume open in the editor, either your existing CV read into it or a blank one to fill. Resumes aimed at one posting are built inside that application instead: Tailor your resume for a job.

Before you start

  • Uploading needs the CV as a PDF or DOCX. Other formats stop at a browser alert, "Only PDF and DOCX files are accepted."
  • Editing is desktop work. A phone will show you a resume, then ask you to switch to the desktop version to change it.
  • Starter (free) accounts can build a limited number of resumes. Past the cap the Premium dialog opens in place of a new resume; see pricing.

Start it

  1. Open Resume in the sidebar. The table is titled Resume Builder and holds everything you have built or uploaded. A new account reads "No resumes yet".
  2. Press Build Resume at the top right. The dialog is headed Start by uploading your existing resume, with a drop zone and, under an "or" rule, Build manually from scratch.

Resume Builder: the table of resumes with the Primary column, and Build Resume at the top right.
  1. From a file: drag your CV onto "Choose a file or drop it here" or press Browse files, then press Next. Next stays greyed out until a file is chosen, which is the usual reason it looks broken, and shows a spinner while the upload runs. The editor opens with your content read out of the document.
  2. From nothing: press Build manually from scratch. It reads "Generating template for your resume..." for a moment, then the editor opens on an empty resume with headings ready to type into.

What the editor does

Content sits on the left, a live preview of the printed page on the right. There is no save button to hunt for: FirstResume stores your changes about a second after you stop typing, so leaving the page loses nothing.

If you uploaded a CV, read the result through. Headings, dates and job titles land in the right fields more often than bullet wording does, and the preview shows you what a recruiter would get. Carry on in Edit your resume, or pick the look first in Change your resume's template and layout.

Back in Resume Builder the new resume appears with today's date under Created on and a dash under Tailored For, since it belongs to no application yet.

More in profile and resumes

  • Profile or resume: what's the difference

Your profile is the pool of everything true about you, a resume is one page drawn from it. Which to update, and why old resumes stay put.

  • Edit your profile

Add a job, a skill or a qualification to your profile, and find the blank row that stops Save Changes from going through without a word.

  • Update your profile from a CV

Upload a PDF or DOCX and FirstResume fills your profile from it in about a minute. What to feed it, and what to check when it finishes.
