Use the action checklist

The Progress % button opens a checklist of what to do at your application's current stage, and swaps it when you change the status.

Action Checklist

Applied
Progress 45%

Here are some recommended actions for you to do at the current stage. Change your application status to view the checklist of the next stage.

Tailor your resume to the position

Modify your resume to highlight relevant skills and experiences that match the job requirements.

Go to

Create a targeted cover letter

Write a specific cover letter addressing the company's needs and your relevant qualifications.

Go to

Build professional connections with recruiters

Establish LinkedIn connections with company recruiters to expand your network.

Complete and submit your application

Submit all required documents and information through the specified application process.

The Action Checklist over the application, with the items for the current status.

What is on it

The items belong to the current status. At Saved you get "Complete Job Summary Details", "Research the company's background and workplace culture", "Assess your alignment with the role and company", "Confirm the application submission deadline" and "Bookmark company profiles for reference". Some carry a Go to link that drops you on the tab where that work happens.

Tick an item once it is done, untick it if you jumped the gun. The percentage is the share of the current list you have ticked, which is why it moves when you tick something and stays put while you work.

Change the status and the list changes

Change the status, from the dropdown at the top of the dialog or from anywhere else, and the items are replaced with the ones for the new stage. The note in the dialog says as much: "Here are some recommended actions for you to do at the current stage. Change your application status to view the checklist of the next stage." Ticks stay with their own stage, so moving forward hands you a fresh list rather than a finished one.

A checklist full of irrelevant items usually means the status is behind where you are. Move the job to Applied and the list catches up.

Not the same as the progress ring

The ring on My Applications fills in thirds on its own: job summary, resume, application kit. This percentage counts only what you have ticked here, and the two move for different reasons. See Track your applications.

Tips

  • Work the Saved list before you submit anything. Confirming the deadline is the item people skip and regret.
  • Use the Go to links rather than hunting through the tabs.
  • Tick as you finish each item. Coming back to a checklist you half remember is how deadlines get missed.

  • Check and fix the job summary

Check the company name, skills and deadline FirstResume pulled out of the advert, and fix them before the rest of your application uses them.

  • Understand your compatibility score

Where your score out of 100 comes from, why an honest one is more use than a high one, and how ticking the skills you have changes it.
